Measuring Sensors & Probes

The MOIST unit construction set offers manyfold possibilies for applications where moisture values need to be taken portably. Depending on the desired moisture range, resolution, interaction volume or measuring depth several moisture sensors can be combined with selection of handhelds.

The spectrum of possible applications is reaching from precision measurements in materials with low moisture contents over well known questions in civil engineering concerning moisture distributions in the middle moisture range to high moisture applications as for measurements in organic materials.

Different interaction volumes of the used microwave applicators allow a variation of the measuring volume from some cm³ to the range around 100 l. The schedule shows the different types of sensing heads with their specifical properties. Depending on the special features of the moisture problem to be solved one or more sensors can be useful for this.

All sensing heads can be combined with the handhelds of the MOIST series. This allows different ways of data acquisition and data processing, which can lead up to the graphical visualization of moisture distributions in objects. In many case only this possibility of raster moisture measurements give the necessary information about the moisture behaviour of objects.

In all possible combinations of sensing heads with handhelds singular measurements can be carried out in a very short time. The handhelds have a standby-logic, that switches on the sensing heads for measurement for about 0.5 secs. This saves energy, because the sensing heads are not continously working. On the other hand the reading is displayed after some 1.5 secs and therefore nearly in real time.

This fast way of measurement leads to the possibility of taking many moisture readings in a short time. The most objects to be measured show some inhomogenities because of their inner structure or their moisture distribution. So it is always useful to carry out some more measurements and to calculate averages.

1  achievable accuracy is depending on the material, its consistency and the quality of the samples available for calibration
2  under the conditions dry material with εr = 4 and low moisture
3  at well defined materials in the lower moisture range (< 10% wet base) under laboratory conditions, T = 23°C = const.
4  non calibrated
