Morphologiy of typical Moisture damages in Civil Engineering

Using microwave raster moisture measurements it is possible to classify moisture damages by means of their images. In addition moisture maps can be used to identify reasons for moisture damages.

A very important help is the ability of the MOIST system to measure moisture in several material layers. By operation with different microwave sensing heads different layers are rated differently. Combining such measurements allows to get rough information about the water distribution in depth direction.

Characteristical morphological features of moisture damages

For nearly all types of damages characteristical morphological features can be identified with microwave based raster moisture measurements. By means of these characteristics it is possible to find the type of damage from moisture maps. The table contains in a simplified manner characteristics corresponding to the type of moisture damage. Please note that in practice moisture damages often appear in combination. For example leakages in floors caused by defective sealings can lead to moisture damages in the surface layers too.

The list shows that for different applications some returning characteristics can be extracted. These are pairs of characteristics like homogenity - inhomogenity, overall moist areas - moisture islands or increase - decrease of moisture in one direction.
